Alfredo De Santis received the Laurea degree in Computer Science (cum laude) from the University of Salerno in 1983. Since 1984, he has been with the Dipartimento di Informatica of University of Salerno, in 1984-1986 as an Instructor in charge of the Computer Laboratory, in 1986-1990 as Researcher Faculty, from November 1990 as Professor of Computer Science.

Since September 2015 he is the Director of the Dipartimento di Informatica, University of Salerno.

From November 1991 to October 1995 and from November 1998 to October 2001 he was the Director of the Dipartimento di Informatica ed Applicazioni, University of Salerno.

He was the chairman of the graduate program in Computer Science at University of Salerno: ciclo XII (1996-2000), ciclo XIII (1997-2001), ciclo XIV (1998-2002), ciclo XV (1999-2002), and ciclo XVI (2000-2003).

He is the chairman of the graduate program in Computer Science and Information Engineering at University of Salerno: ciclo XXIX (2013-2016), ciclo XXX (2014-2017), and ciclo XXXI (2015-2018).

From September 1987 to February 1990 he has been Visiting Scientist at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York. He spent August 1994 at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), Berkeley CA, USA, as Visiting Scientist.

He was the Program Chairman of Eurocrypt '94, Perugia, Italy, May 9-12, 1994, of the Fifth Italian Conference on Theoretical Computer Science, Ravello, Italy, November 9-11, 1995, and of the Security in Communication Networks Conference, Amalfi, Italy, September 16-17, 1996. He was Co-director of the Advanced School on Computational Learning and Cryptography, Vietri sul Mare, Italy, September 13-24, 1993. He served on the scientific program committee of several international conferences.

He was General Co-Chair (with Minorou Uehara) of the 17th International Conference on Network-Based Information Systems (NBiS 2014), Salerno, Italy, September 10-12, 2014.

He is Guest Editor (with Ilsun You and Gabriele Lenzini) of the Special Issue of IEEE Systems Journal “Insider Threats to Information Security, Digital Espionage and Counter-Intelligence”.

He was the editor of the proceedings of the Fifth Italian Conference on Theoretical Computer Science, World Scientific, 1996. He was the editor of the volume ``Advances in Cryptology - EUROCRYPT 94'', vol. 950 of ``Lecture Notes in Computer Science'', Springer-Verlag, 1995. He was co-editor of the volume Sequences II: Methods in Communication, Security and Computer Science, Springer-Verlag, 1993.

He is associate editor of Applied Soft Computing. He has been associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security.

From November 2009 to October 2012 he was a member of the Board of Directors (Consiglio di Amministrazione) of Consortium Garr (Gestione Ampliamento delle Reti di Ricerca) for the management of the communication network of the public research in Italy.

From Dicember 2009 to November 2012 he was a member of the Board of Directors, Director of the University of Salerno unit, and member of the Scientific Committee of the Consorzio Interuniversitario per l'Informatica (CINI), a national consortium of 34 Italian Universities, whose mission is basic or industry-oriented research projects on Information and Communication Technologies.

From December 2011 to November 2013 he was a member of GEV (Group of Experts for the Evaluation) area 01 

(Mathematics and Computer Science), selected by ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities

and Research Institutes), for the Italian research assessment in the seven years 2004-2010 (VQR 2004-2010).

His research interests include Algorithms, Data Security, Digital Forensics, Cryptography, Communication Networks, Information Theory, and Data Compression.
